Best Perplexity alternatives

Like Perplexity's cited answers but need the research to go further? Rixx researches by default too, then runs deep and wide research, analyses your data and builds the finished file.

Jobs to try

  • Cited answer: What are the current RBI repo rate and the last three changes, with dates? Give a short answer with sources.
  • Deep research report: Write a cited report on the state of small modular nuclear reactors: leading designs, projects under construction, costs and regulatory status by country.
  • Compare 12 tools: Compare 12 AI note-taking apps on price, platforms, languages, privacy policy and standout feature. One table with a source for every cell.
  • Ask across my PDFs: I've uploaded three annual reports. Compare revenue growth, margins and stated risks across them, with page references for each figure.
  • Brief to slides: Research the electric two-wheeler market in Southeast Asia and turn it into an 8-slide editable PowerPoint with charts and source lines.

What you get back

  • Researched, cited answer: A quick answer in chat with every fact from the web cited inline, so you can click through and check it.
  • Deep research report: Multi-step research across many sources, delivered as a structured report with citations at the point of each claim.
  • Answers from your documents: Ask across PDFs, Word, Excel and slides, with references back to the document, alongside what Rixx finds on the web.
  • Finished, editable files: Editable PowerPoint, Excel with working formulas, Word and PDF, with sources kept inside.

Researched and cited by default

No search toggle and no research mode to switch on. Rixx researches the live web before it answers a factual question, reads the files you give it, and cites every fact it uses.

We make Rixx, so we rank it first for the work it is built for. Every fact about another product links to that company's own pages and is stated as of October 2026.

The short list

  • Best for researched, cited, finished work: Rixx. Research is on by default, every fact from the web is cited inline, and the same box runs deep research, wide research, data analysis and file building.
  • Best all-round assistant: ChatGPT. Search with citations, deep research and file creation inside a general assistant.
  • Best for Google users: Gemini. Deep Research can draw on your Gmail and Drive, with your permission.
  • Best for paper-first questions: Consensus. An academic search engine built on research papers.

Why people look for a Perplexity alternative

Perplexity is one of the best answer engines available. It searches and cites on every query, and its Research mode writes longer reports (as of October 2026). If cited answers are all you need, it is a strong default.

The usual reason to look further is what happens after the answer. A cited paragraph is a starting point. Many jobs need the research to cover dozens of companies at once, to include your own PDFs and spreadsheets, to run real analysis on data, or to end as a deck, workbook or report a colleague will open. That is the gap the tools below fill in different ways.

1. Rixx: best for researched, cited, finished work

Rixx works like Perplexity at the start: it researches before it answers. There is no search toggle and no research mode to switch on, and every fact from the web is cited inline. The difference is how far the job can go from there.

  • Ask anything. A researched, cited answer in seconds. This is the closest match to a Perplexity query.
  • Deep research. Multi-step research across many sources, delivered as a cited report you can download.
  • Wide research. Rixx splits big research across parallel agents, such as "compare 12 tools" or "profile 30 companies", and merges the results into one table or report.
  • Analyse your data and documents. Upload PDFs of up to 1,000 pages, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, CSV and images. Ask across them with references back to the document. Rixx uses its own private workspace, with a full terminal and Python, to clean, compute and chart your spreadsheets.
  • Make the file. Editable PowerPoint (six themes, native charts), Excel (working formulas, recalculated and checked), Word and PDF, with sources kept inside. Rixx renders and reviews its own files before handing them back.

Rixx has two speeds. An Answer is a quick, researched, cited reply in chat. A Job is an agent that plans, researches, analyses and builds files in the background, so you can leave and come back. Auto picks for you, or you can choose Job yourself.

Pricing. Free gives 50 credits a day plus 500 a month. Plus is $8/month, Pro $20/month and Max $100/month; in India, Starter is ₹399/month. Every plan, including Free, gets every feature. A quick cited answer uses a few credits; a deep report or a job that builds files uses more. See pricing.

Pick Rixx if you like cited answers but your work ends in a report, a research table, an analysis or a file. Read the full Rixx vs Perplexity comparison, or see how Rixx works as an AI search engine that cites its sources.

2. ChatGPT: best all-round assistant

ChatGPT search shows citations and a Sources view, per OpenAI's help center. Deep research writes longer reports, and OpenAI says its outputs include citations or source links (deep research help). ChatGPT Work creates documents, spreadsheets and presentations (all as of October 2026).

Pricing. Free; Go at $8/month in the US (OpenAI); Plus at $20/month (OpenAI). Limits vary by plan; see chatgpt.com/pricing.

Pick ChatGPT if you want one general assistant for writing, coding, images and research. See Rixx vs ChatGPT.

3. Gemini: best for Google users

Google says some Gemini responses are grounded in Google Search results (Gemini help). Gemini Deep Research plans an approach, searches many websites and writes a multi-page report. With your permission it can also use context from Gmail, Drive and Chat, and reports can become audio overviews and other formats in Canvas (as of October 2026).

Pricing. Plan limits are on Google's Gemini subscriptions page.

Pick Gemini if your documents and email already live in Google Workspace. See Rixx vs Gemini.

4. Consensus: best for paper-first questions

Consensus is an academic search engine. Its help center describes paper search, cited synthesis, filters, Study Snapshots, the Consensus Meter and full-text chat with papers (as of October 2026).

Pricing. Free and paid plans; see Consensus subscriptions.

Pick Consensus if the answer should come mainly from peer-reviewed studies. See Rixx vs Consensus.

Three jobs, three ways to use Rixx

A number you will repeat in a meeting. Ask for an Answer: "What is the current market size of plant-based dairy in India, and how fast is it growing?" Rixx researches first and cites each figure, so you can open the source before you quote it.

A question that covers many things at once. "Compare 12 AI note-taking apps on price, platforms and privacy policy" is wide research. Rixx sends parallel agents to each app and merges the findings into one table with a source per row. Download it as Excel and keep working.

An answer that has to become a deliverable. Start with a cited answer, then ask Rixx to turn it into a Word report or an 8-slide deck. A job runs in the background, builds the file, renders it, reviews it and hands it back with the sources inside. Try the AI report generator or the AI presentation maker.
